Hi everyone!

We are final year students of the Language and Communication Programme at the University of Hong Kong. In this blog, you will get a taste of language in electronic communication (e-communication). What will be brought to you is the introduction of various discourse styles and linguistic phenomena on the Internet, ranging from languages on forum; in particular, we will dedicate a separate entry on the case study of HKGOLDEN.com; abbreviations and simplifications of words in both the contexts of mainland China and Hong Kong; language censorship in mainland China (widely known as “harmonization” or “he xie”); the use of emoticons; and, overall, the impacts of the above issues on language use and formal communication as a consequence of the emergence of new words and structures.

Start your exploration of language in e-communication now!
